Should You Use Sunblock Or Sunscreen?

Sunblock and sunscreen are two words we often see used interchangeably, but are they the same thing? Let’s look into that further….

What’s The Difference Between Sunblock and Sunscreen?

Sunscreen is usually a chemical compound which your skin absorbs when it is applied. The ‘chemicals’ in the sunscreen absorbs the UV rays from the sun and prevent them from doing damage to your body. Most sunscreens are able to be rubbed in and are not visible. Sunscreen provides the best overall daily protection against skin damage by the sun.

Sunblock is a type of cream which blocks the UV rays from reaching your skin. It is something which you can usually see on your skin because it does not rub in. A sunblock is not absorbed by your skin.

If you were using regular chemical based sun protection products, a sunblock would actually be the better choice because it is not absorbed by your skin. But in reality though, using an organic based sunscreen such as our un-tinted Eco Tan Organic All Natural Sunscreen is actually the best choice. That’s because our natural sunscreen does not have any nasties for your skin to absorb, but still provides you with the best protection against sun damage for your skin.

What Does SPF Mean?

SPF is an abbreviation for Sun Protection Factor. It is a way of letting you know how much more protection your sunscreen offers you, than if you were not wearing the product. For instance, our WotNot Baby Sunscreen has an SPF of 30. That means the user’s skin will stay protected for 30 times longer than it would normally take their skin to burn without having applied sunscreen. Because it is also a Broad Spectrum sunscreen, protection is offered against both UVA and UVB rays.

What Are UVA and UVB Rays?

UVA and UVB are two types of rays from the sun, both of which can damage our skin. UVA rays will penetrate the top layer of your skin, helping to create those wrinkles, sunspots and leathery skin we all try to avoid. UVB rays are the ones most likely to cause skin cancer as they attack the top layer of our skin.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use?

The right amount of sunscreen you need to use is based upon the SPF rating of the product you are using. Our organic WotNot Family Sunscreen has an SPF 30 rating. So to achieve an SPF rating of 30 on your skin, you will need to apply 2mg of sunscreen for every 2cm2 of skin. So for your face, you would need about a teaspoon of organic sunscreen. Any less and you would not be achieving the SPF 30 rating.
